Robert A. Taft--led a Republican coalition against Harry Truman.
Robert Taft was a Senator from Ohio who was able to bring together conservative Republicans and Southern Democrats into a new Republican coalition. He is most well known for the Taft-Hartley Act which restricted the power of unions after World War II.
