The process of natural selection allows species to become better suited to survive in their environments. This may also be referred to as survival of the fittest. So if an organism has a genetic mutation that allows them to flourish, then it will be 'naturally selected' to continue thriving in the environment, as organisms not suited to the environment may become sparsely populated or extinct.
