Rheumatoid arthritis begins with the inflammation of the synovial lining of a joint. It is a form of arthritis that causes pain, inflammation, stiffness and loss of joint function. It can affect any joint, but it is common in the wrists and fingers. More women than men suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.
