"A love of asymmetry" is the characteristic of japanese art that was already evident in haniwa figures of the kofun period.
The Kofun period follows the Yayoi period and it refers to the era that was from around 250 to 538 AD in the history of japan and during this period Haniwa, that are actually terracotta clay figures were used in rituals and also used as funerary object.
