Tim is the jealous ostler, he is envious of the unnamed highwayman, who is in love with Bess, and she loves him back. He betrays him eventually, which leads Bess to her death, and upon hearing of her demise, the Highwayman also dies trying to get revenge, only to be reunited with his love in the Other world.
