What did the freemasons stand for in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries?

The main point that the Freemasons stood for was Republicanism. This was in contrast to the monarchical form of government that was in place in much of Europe at the time. This explains why many of the Founding Fathers in the US during this period were Masonic members.
