How did the application of the Monroe Doctrine change over time?

The Monroe Doctrine, at first was designed to assert the independence of America from the skirmishes and wars of other nations, to declare that we would not tolerate interference by Eastern powers, and that our governing style was different than theirs. It eventually became the platform to pry into many Western sovereign natain's business.
