Suppose P is between M and N. If MN = 10, MP = x-3, and PN = x+1, what is the value of x?

MN = MP + PN

10 = (x - 3) + (x + 1)

10 = x + x - 3 + 1

10 = 2x - 2                        (add 2 to each side)

12 = 2x                             (divide 2 from each side)

12/2 = x

6 = x
