To solve this, change both into common denominators.  Change the 4 into an 8 and multiply 1 by 2 (8 ÷ 4 = 2).  Now, you have 7/8 - 2/8.  Subtract to get 5/8.  Since it is already in simplest form, there is no need to simplify it.

=7/8+−1/4

=7/8+−2/8

=7+−2/8

=5/8
