The concluding sentence of the
Declaration of Independence is an undertaking among the signers, to “mutually
pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor,” and several
of them and their fellow loyalists did in fact sacrifice their lives and affluences
in service to the country.
