Alsace-Lorraine was a territory that was taken from Germany and given back to France after WWI. This was an area of land consisting of 5,067 square miles that France had lost to Germany after the Franco-Prussian war and were unhappy about. They suffered economically after the loss due to the iron ore deposits in the territory. France would not settle until they got the land back, which they did.
