Is there anything like the ancient Chinese merit system seen today? Explain.

Yes there is. 
The merit system refers to the hiring of government employees based on their accomplishments, not their connection.
In ancient chinese, one of the best way to do this is through the testing called imperial examination. Today, they still do this, the name of the test is called The chinese civil service exam
