Why is it important for a scientist to be open-minded but skeptical?

A scientist has to have an open mind and be prepared to experiment and search for new results, and be ready to accept those results even though he or she may have not originally agreed with them. On the other hand, skepticism is also important because everything should be taken with a grain of salt - a scientist has to check everything a couple of times before deciding that it is correct and proven.
