the reason why USSR want to control countries in Eastern Europe was: The USSR needed to protect its western border from future attacks.
In order for countries in Western Europe to invade the Soviet Union, they have to pass several countries such as Poland and Ukraine. If the Soviet Union managed to control these countries, they will be able to prevent potential attacks.
