In the era of the story, it took place during the Franco-Prussian War wherein the writer expresses his own unfortunate events of what happened at the time. The role of the Prussian Soldiers, is basically their symbolism of corruption and idiocy of the French, which depicts something wrong with their actions. The story also highlights resourcefulness, courage and patriotism of the main character.
