Mitral regurgitation is a backflow of blood from the valve. So basically the valve doesn't completely close properly. This means that the blood Is flowing backward in the heart. Many times, the heart will try to fix the regurgitation, by making and extra beat/ pump to get out the blood that has back flowed.
