Why was there a need for the creation of self-government in the English colonies?

One reason self-government developed before the French and Indian War was because Great Britain practiced salutary or benign neglect. Because Great Britain was so far away (distance), the colonies needed government closer to home so they could make decisions and laws that affected their daily lives.
