Genetic diversity is the raw matter for evolution. Any action concerned to increase the genetic diversity of natural populations will invariably help to increase the adaptive fitness of such populations.
- Genetic diversity can be defined as the gene pool or amount of genetic information of natural populations and species.
- Natural selection act by selecting those individuals genetically better adapted, which are capable of surviving and reproducing (i.e., the adaptive fitness) in a given environment.
- It is well known that interbreeding between natural populations can increase genetic diversity, thereby increasing the likelihood of facing environmental changes (thus increasing the likelihood of survival and reproduction).
- In consequence, the human actions that are most likely to improve the long-term survival of the amphibians will be building ponds in the areas of dry land to promote interbreeding between the separated populations (Option D).
