Well, cats exist because of their cousins (lions, tigers, any big feline animal), and they all come from their ancestors, who were able to survive and live. Since their ancestors were able to survive, they managed to live through the next "generation" of the animal population, up to today, where we Humans have made some of the smaller feline species to become household pets.
