The Fugitive Slave Act required Northerners to capture runaway slaves who escaped from the South, and to return them to their respective owners. Many Northerners opposed the law, so they worked for the Underground Railroad, a system where people hid the runaway slaves and protected them once they reached the North. Hope this helps! :)
