The difference between two numbers is 34. The larger exceeds 3 times the smaller by 4. Find the numbers.

x-(3x+4)=34

x= -19

-19-(3(-19)+4)=34

-19+(57-4)=34

-19+(53)=34

-19+53=34

34=34

therefore the first number is -19 and the second number is 53
