why worker bees are called sterile female?

Answer:

Worker bees are sterile although they are female because their ovary is not activated that means they cannot lay eggs like Queen bee. When Queen bee come closer to Worker bees,the worker bees egg producing gene subside, so no eggs are produced.When eggs are not produced , no fertilization takes places, so they are non- fertile or sterile.
