Vampiric folklore arose as a misconception of the blood being the body life source and the part that holds the soul of humans. This

justified the ability of vampires to live for centuries without aging or dying because they lived off the soul of victims whose blood they sucked. It also had to do with vampire bats that were seen to come out only at night to feed off the blood of their victims; the bood being their sole source of food.
