The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act was enacted by the Congress in 1966 in order to improve the safety standards for motor vehicles, as well as traffic safety. This was a response from the government to the increase of fatalities that were directly related to car accidents. The number of people killed on roads had increased by % 500 since 1925.
