How does adding salt affect the freezing point of water

it affects it by making the freezing point to become lower.

When salt is added into the water, often times, and salt and chlorine ions would mix with water molecules. The ions they carry affect the temperature of  the body of water, however when the water is freezing the ions would have a hard time mixing thus, retaining the liquid form of the water but the temperature slowly goes down.
