Why did states want to keep the power to tax?

So they could fund money to build buildings, get stuff for the army,etc.

Answer: First reason, they wanted state rights.

Second reason, they didn’t want the government to control them completely. Why else did they break away from Britain? They want their own rights.

Also so the federal (main) government don’t overuse their power.
