So, let’s pretend those 0’s at the end and the $’s are gone. That’s 5.4+8.7+6.3 .
Then, pretend there isn’t a . there. 54+87+63
Split them up by 10’s and 1’s
5+8+6=19
And
4+7+3=14
Now, we put the decimal back in. (That’s what the . is when there are numbers to the left of it.)
19+1.4=19+1+0.4
19+1=20
20+0.4=20.4
Then, put the 0 and $ back where they were before. $20.40 is your answer!
