Rational exponents work like this: if you raise the number x to the p/q power, i.e. [tex]x^{\frac{p}{q}}[/tex], you're considering the q-th root of x to the power of p.

So, in your case, [tex]x^{\frac{2}{3}}[/tex] means the cubic root of x squared.
