The first equation defines y for us, so all we have to do is substitute 2x - 2 into the 2nd equation for y and solve.

8x + 2 (2x - 2) = -16
8x + 4x - 4 = -16
12x - 4 = -16
12x = -12
x = -1

Now that we have a value for x, we substitute -1 back into one of the equations to find the y value.

y = 2x - 2
y = 2 (-1) -2
y = -2 - 2
y = -4

So our solution set is
(-1, -4)
