It was possible to decipher hieroglyphs because of the Rosetta Stone. The stone, found in 1799, has three versions of a text, written in hieroglyphs, Demotic script (a script developed in ancient Egypt after the hieroglyphs) and also in Ancient Greek. Through the understanding of the hieroglyphs an understanding of the Ancient Egyptian civilization was achieved.
