The quadratic formula is

[tex] x = \dfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} [/tex]

In this problem, a = 2, b = -4, c = 1

[tex] x = \dfrac{-(-4) \pm \sqrt{(-4)^2 - 4(2)(1)}}{2(2)} [/tex]

[tex] x = \dfrac{4 \pm \sqrt{16 - 8}}{4} [/tex]

[tex] x = \dfrac{4 \pm \sqrt{8}}{4} [/tex]

[tex] x = \dfrac{4 \pm 2\sqrt{2}}{4} [/tex]

[tex] x = 1 \pm \dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2} [/tex]
